Mexico and European Union reaffirm commitment to the defense, promotion and strengthening of human rights and democracy / @SRE_mx >>>
#SRE.- Mexico and the European Union (EU) held the XII High Level Dialogue on Human Rights in Brussels, which allowed both partners to reaffirm their commitment to the defense, promotion and strengthening of human rights and democracy, through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
The meeting was co-chaired by Olof Skoog, EU Special Representative for Human Rights, and Enrique Ochoa, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Both sides agreed to strengthen their engagement and cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels to address human rights issues. The EU welcomed Mexico’s upcoming participation as a member of the Human Rights Council. Both partners pledged to strengthen their partnership in the defense of multilateralism and the achievement of an ambitious agenda on the universal protection and promotion of human rights.
This High Level Dialogue was the first one between the parties dedicated to human rights since the beginning of the new political cycles in Mexico and the EU, following the June elections in Mexico and the change of leadership in the Union, which took place on December 1st of this year.
Building on previous dialogues, the EU and Mexico reviewed recent human rights developments in the world and within the EU and Mexico and exchanged information on their latest legislative and policy initiatives in this area.
During the meeting, they discussed various issues such as gender equality and the fight against gender and domestic violence; poverty eradication and economic, social and cultural rights; migration, human mobility, xenophobia and hate speech.
