#ISSSTE.- The Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (Issste), headed by Martí Batres Guadarrama, recommends maintaining healthy habits and following a balanced diet, by modifying the preparation of typical foods and engaging in physical activity during the Christmas holidays, in order to take care of one’s health and prevent chronic degenerative diseases.

Paola Aimée Gómez Ramírez, a nutritionist at Issste’s Center for Dietetics and Nutrition, indicated that the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and hypertension are a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet that involves the consumption of alcohol, sugar and fats.

“In the holiday period, the famous ‘Guadalupe-Reyes’, this can lead to a higher risk of having some alterations in glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides and also promote weight gain,” she warned.

The specialist emphasized that small adjustments in food preparation can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy diet. One of the recommendations is to reduce the use of fats by opting for cooking methods, such as baking, steaming or grilling food, which also contributes to reduce calories and take care of cardiovascular health.

Gómez Ramírez emphasized that vegetable fats such as olive oil are better options to prepare food. Also, avoid the use of butter and reduce sugar, or if necessary, replace it with sweeteners and consume natural water or make an infusion with mineral water and fruit preferably, to preserve the sweet taste.
