399 pieces are returned to Mexico’s cultural heritage / @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Legal Consultancy, and the Ministry of Culture, delivered to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) 399 cultural pieces belonging to Mexico, which were recovered through the Mexican Embassy in France and the consulates of Chicago, Dallas, Montreal, New York and Vancouver.

The reports, carried out by INAH specialists, confirm that these are pieces belonging to different cultures and from different periods of the pre-Hispanic era, including western Mexico, the Gulf Coast, the Central High Plateau, the Oaxaca area and the Mayan area.

Among the lots, the recovery of a clay pot of Mayan affiliation, made between 500 and 900 A.D. (Chicago); a seal representing a fantastic being, made by the Zapotec culture between 200 and 900 A.D. (Dallas); an anthropomorphic figure in the Ixtlan del Rio style, dating from 100 to 700 A.D. (France); a candleholder in the Ixtlan del Rio style (Mexico); and an anthropomorphic figure in the Ixtlan del Rio style, dating from 100 to 700 A.D. (France); a candleholder in the Ixtlan del Rio style, dating from 100 to 700 A.D. (Mexico). C. (France); a Teotihuacan style double-chambered candelero created between 200 and 750 A.D. (Montreal); a zoomorphic turtle figure from the Mesoamerican Postclassic period (New York) and 12 archaeological pieces from various antiquities and areas of the current national territory (Vancouver).

The restitution of the cultural objects is the result of the joint work of the authorities of the Federal Government and Mexico’s representations abroad, whose constant efforts to recover the cultural legacy of our nation to its place of origin have been one of the guiding principles of Mexican foreign policy, whether through cooperation with local authorities, seizures, auction detentions, or through negotiations with academic institutions and museums.

The Mexican government reiterates its commitment to the native communities, its perseverance with Mexico’s cultural heritage and its conviction in the constant fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural property.
