V Meeting of the Working Group on Migratory and Consular Affairs between Mexico and Colombia @SRE_mx >>>

#SRE.- The Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Colombia, Laura Sarabia, inaugurated on the afternoon of March 19, 2025, in Mexico City, the work of the V Meeting of the Mexico-Colombia Working Group on Migration and Consular Affairs. This mechanism, the main instance of bilateral dialogue and consultation on the matter, stems from the Memorandum of Understanding on the Strategic Relationship, and previously met in 2017, 2019 and 2022.

The Foreign Ministers welcomed the reactivation of the mechanism and underscored the importance of dialogue and coordinated bilateral and regional action in these areas, particularly in view of the enormous challenges posed by the migration phenomenon in the current global context.

They also expressed the full willingness of their governments to manage this phenomenon based on an approach centered on the individual and his or her human rights, in a comprehensive, supportive and responsible manner and by addressing the structural causes that give rise to it, as well as the protection of the human rights and dignity of migrants; the search for solutions to external political and economic factors that exacerbate migration; the expansion of regular labor mobility channels; the articulation of efforts to respond to reverse migration flows; the fight against crimes associated with migration; and the articulation of policies and mechanisms to address irregular migration flows. In this regard, they recognized the need to strengthen alliances and understandings with other countries in the hemisphere, under the principle of shared responsibility.

The Foreign Ministers expressed their confidence that the work of the Group will generate concrete actions for the benefit of the nationals of both parties.

Subsequently, the Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Mexican Foreign Ministry, Raquel Serur, and the Director of Migration, Consular Affairs and Citizen Services of the Colombian Foreign Ministry, Frank Godoy, co-chaired the work of the mechanism, in which the Undersecretary for Human Rights and Migration of the Ministry of the Interior, Arturo Medina Padilla, also participated.
