#IMSS.- The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reaffirms its commitment to the protection, promotion, and prevention of the health of nearly 6 million children between the ages of zero and nine, especially in primary care, where strategies are implemented to promote healthy lifestyles, early disease detection, and nutritional interventions for the child population.
On International Day of the Girl and the Boy, celebrated this April 30th, the head of the Neonatal Metabolic Screening and Well-Child Care Medical Area, Dr. Mario Ángel Burciaga Torres, explained that the Institute has various preventive programs, including PrevenIMSS, PediatrIMSS, Breastfeeding, and the Well-Child Care Clinic, which focuses on monitoring child growth and development and providing comprehensive care in a cross-cutting, friendly, and multidisciplinary manner.
He detailed that, during 2024, more than 3.7 million consultations were provided in Family Medicine Units (FMUs), of which 524,221 were well-child visits. Likewise, more than 3.8 million preventive care services were provided to this age group.
He emphasized that the Institute also has educational strategies such as ChiquitIMSS Junior and ChiquitIMSS to teach healthy habits, allowing children to understand the importance of self-care at an early stage of their development.
Dr. Burciaga Torres said that the IMSS has recently been working jointly with health sector agencies and the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) on the «Live Healthy, Live Happy» strategy, in which medical and nursing staff carry out various interventions in health promotion, oral and eye care, as well as weight and height monitoring for children from first to sixth grade.
He noted that, in the case of newborns, IMSS staff perform a complete examination to look for signs of a health problem, using tools such as a visual examination and expanded neonatal cardiac and metabolic screening. If any risk factors or suspected health conditions are identified, specific tests are performed according to each individual’s needs.
