Located within the INSP facilities, this facility serves as a critical nexus for scientific inquiry, directly informing the design of evidence-based public policies and the comprehensive National Health and Nutrition Surveys (Ensanut). By centralizing these biological assets, the Ministry of Health fortifies its capacity to address systemic health challenges with unprecedented precision and analytical depth. This institutional milestone, occurring on the Institute’s 39th anniversary, ensures that the nation remains at the vanguard of epidemiological research and community well-being.
Director General Eduardo César Lazcano Ponce emphasized that the Institute’s primary mission is to «contribute to social equity and the protection of public health» through professional training and cross-sectoral collaboration. Supported by the Río Arronte Foundation, the Biobank features advanced ultra-freezing infrastructure, including twenty-five specialized freezers and a cryogenic chamber to preserve blood, plasma, and urine samples. Under the guidance of Jesús Martínez Barnetche, Director of the CISEI, the facility has transitioned toward modern, sustainable equipment, replacing outdated nitrogen-based systems with high-efficiency technology. Complementing these technical advancements, Teresa Shamah Levy, Director of the CIEE, highlighted how the Biobank meticulously preserves samples to track micronutrient deficiencies and lead exposure in vulnerable populations.
